In to the Deep Web
“The Internet, like the steam engine, is a technological breakthrough that changed the world.” Peter Singer, the current Professor of the Princeton University and a Laureate Professor in the University of Melbourne. The internet not only changed how we live, but it will continue to exist and influence our society in many ways years to come. Upcoming technologies will be designed to fit with the internet because of its versatility and its advance capabilities. In the creation of the internet, the deep web also was created. The deep web is like an evil twin of the internet that search engines like Google cannot detect. Although the internet is praised as one of the best technological accomplishments, the internet can bring havoc in the future through the deep web because private information can be easily be compromised, black market, and the distribution of child pornography.
In today’s technological advancements, smuggling of illegal drugs, and weapons also took to a new level. The deep web has websites like the Silk Web, which acts like a global black market. Anyone can now just go to the website and buy illegal products and it will be sent to them via courier or mail. Its mind boggling how easy for anyone to purchase illegal weapons and drugs. The black market is now thriving because of the internet. According to Newton-Small, Ross Ulbricht, the owner of the website Silk Road, earned $80 million in fees through the website. Ulbricht was caught by the authorities on October 1, 2013, but that’s just one website taken down. Authorities need to focus more on improving the tracking devices in order to catch these criminals. Having to sell their product anonymously is a danger in which anyone could have been the culprits.
Cracking down on these criminals is not an easy task. These cyber criminals have so many options in order to deceive the authorities. “There are plenty of mainstream technologies that criminals can use their activities: satellite phones, PIN messaging on Blackberrys and even Apple iMessage, the instant messaging service on iPhones and iPads.”(Grossman). These criminals are sneaky and have many more options in their arsenal in order to stay low. It’s not an easy task to try to catch them. Shutting websites and forcing them to sell their product outside of the internet is a much easier task of policing. Having to take out their ability to be anonymous will greatly increase the probability of the criminals being tracked and caught.
We put what we see, eat, hear, smell, feel, experience and almost everything and every day in the internet. The quote, “You don’t know me,” is almost non-existing. A persons personal information is exposed and for everyone to see. Having to change your profile to private, doesn’t make a difference to those devious online hackers. Cyber thief is always a possibility and no one is safe from it. The deep web is like an ice burg that is hidden in the bottom and the regular internet up in the surface. The deep web is a notorious place to be in in which hackers are waiting for viewers to click the wrong link. This shows the internet still needs to improve its security systems. Traditional search engines cannot see or retrieve content in the deep web which makes policing the internet is a must improvement. Cyber-crimes are on the rise and will continue to rise with all the personal technologies being built around the internet. Almost every technology can be connected to the internet nowadays.
The future of the internet is still at risk. Security system need to keep up to the online hackers. These hackers will constantly find and solution to every security system. They will always find a way to infiltrate personal information that will eventually lead to identity thief. Security companies need to keep up and provide new securities in order to keep the hackers in the move. As long as the internet exist, hackers will continue to exist. If we are willing to use the internet in the future security systems need to be gradually upgraded.
The deep web is dark full of disgusting websites. It is the lair for pedophiles that searches child pornography. Child pornography is distributed to different websites in the deep web and authorities cannot track down the ones who distributes them. It is unreal that people do such action. Many big company search engines have started to act on this. “Governments Google and Microsoft to improve their algorithms so as to block child abuse images from appearing in search results, something both companies both agreed to do. This is a big improvement in which big search engine companies are taking steps in to prevent these images to be up in public.”(Steadman). It is a good start that big search engines are taking an action on this issue. In order for the internet to be safe for the public, child pornography should be checked more often.
The internet is a great technological breakthrough, but it still has its flaws. Hackers can infiltrate your private information, the cyber black market, and the distribution of child pornography. These are big problems that we have to fix so that future of the internet is in good hands. If not treated, the internet will be cause of society breaking apart. Almost everyone uses internet and if its security is compromised, we are all in danger. Cyber black market is becoming a big business and arms dealers will make tones of profit from it. If we want to keep the streets off with illegal drugs and weapons, we will have to start tracking down the dealers and taking down the websites. It’s a monumental task, but starting and informing people of the dangers of the internet is a good start.
